The design of this residence is unique and stands out from others due to its emphasis on the user's philosophy of life. The entryway of the house creates a sense of subjectivity, both in the public and private areas. The tea room and dining area are strategically placed to showcase the sincerity of hosting guests in the "One encounter, One chance" tea ceremony. The user, a photographer and life artist, aims to present the idea of "Follow the nature" aesthetics in this quaint house.
The design team has focused on incorporating natural elements and minimizing colors and decorations to bring back the purity of space. By using the original structure of the building, the design lifts the restrictions of space and allows the true meaning of life art to flow in the dimensions of art, music, and philosophy. The house is adorned with antiques collected by the owner over the years, creating a rustic and serene atmosphere. This serves as a reminder to return to the basics and embrace the old and the new, leading to a sustainable life without material waste.
The technical specifications of the design include a total area of 219.83 square meters, with 200 square meters for the interior and 19.83 square meters for the exterior. The use of wood columns, often seen in traditional houses, highlights the irregular beauty of natural materials and blurs the boundaries between the interior and exterior. This design approach challenges the notion that architecture and nature are opposed to each other, instead presenting the interior space as an extension of nature.
The interaction with this design is centered around creating a sense of zen and spaciousness. By tearing down walls and incorporating large windows, the space feels open and connected to the surrounding environment. The presence of two "spiritual pillars" inside the house adds a touch of organic beauty, with their rough wooden texture and weather-beaten style. The collections displayed throughout the house maintain a rustic and blanking style, reflecting the user's ideal beauty.
This project was completed in February 2021 in Taipei. The design team faced challenges in erecting log columns, considering the influence of humidity and temperature on the wood. To avoid cracking, they reserved space between the expansion coefficient of the wood and the support points of the ground and ceiling. Additionally, the traffic flow arrangement was carefully balanced to create a pleasant place for hosting guests while respecting the privacy of family members.
This unique residence, inspired by Taoism philosophy, offers a serene and simple way of life. It has been recognized for its outstanding design and creativity, receiving the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2022. This award acknowledges designs that incorporate best practices in art, science, design, and technology, contributing to improvements in quality of life.
